It’s #authorlifemonth day 15, which means: music! I keep secret playlists for all of my projects, filled with tons of music that fits the tone and emotion of each story (sometimes each scene), and I have a pretty rad public playlist for THE MIDNIGHTS, if you want to listen (find me on Spotify: snsmetana). It’s always a mix of music I loved in high school (the most emo of emo) to get me into the headspace of being a teenager, some classic rock, and some newer tunes. . As for the picture? This was the first record I ever bought. I was fifteen. For some reason, my dad let me drive him and my best friend all the way to Amoeba in LA on just my learner’s permit (oh the faith), where I sold a bunch of old CDs and found this gem to take home with my earnings. I didn’t even own a record player yet (in the early 00s, iPods were brand new and CDs were still the thing and the current vinyl renaissance hadn’t quite hit yet). I just thought having my favorite album as an LP would be pretty cool. Today’s #authorlifemonth topic is biggest distraction. At first, I was going to post my cat because obv. But: She’s not really my biggest distraction. Life is, in general. Life is a distraction to writing, and writing is a distraction to life, and trying to find the balance between the two—or the ways in which the two collaborate and inform each other—is one of the biggest challenges I, personally, face as a writer (I do not write full time). I’m not sure I’ll ever find the perfect solution. There are never enough hours in a day, and I’ll always feel guilty for the days I don’t write, and when I’m writing all day, I’ll feel guilty for not going outside. But here’s something that has freed me up a little bit: years ago, a mentor told me that all that time you spend thinking about your book, your characters, your plot, etc—that counts. You need that time to let ideas germinate. You still have to put words on the page eventually, but everyone writes at their own pace. I try to stick to a schedule when I’m not buried in non-creative work and day job and sleepiness and chores and and and—but even so. Sometimes, we need to let our distractions win. We need to keep thinking, and just clean the damn living room. And hopefully, when we sit back down again, the words will come a little easier. Wow I didn’t intend to write this much. You know what’s funny? Today, when I looked at the #authorlifemonth prompt, I thought: dang, this will be tough. I have been lucky enough to meet some of the most incredible writers/people over the past few years, but I’m terrible at remembering to take photos at conferences and things when I actually see them. I legit didn’t think I’d have many—if any—decent photos to share today, and was totally prepared to post about my cat (my #1 writing bud tbh). But what a joy it was to scroll through my camera roll and find all these gems. Definitely didn’t capture everyone but got a lot! In my current WIP, I’m again writing about Orange, CA—the same universe where THE MIDNIGHTS takes place. This photograph shows the Orange Circle in Old Towne Orange, an important part of the city for my MC, and for me as a teenager. I’m really terrible at keeping to an instagram schedule, so I’ve never done an ig challenge (is that even what they’re called? 🤔) BUT, I’ve really loved seeing everyone’s #authorlifemonth posts, all these amazing writers celebrating their accomplishments. So, here’s mine! . I cannot believe this book came out almost a year ago.
